Birds of Utah - A field guide

posted by Tim Avery at
on Saturday, February 5, 2011

For a few years I have wanted to work on a field guide to the birds of Utah. Obviously it wouldn't be a big ticket item in book stores, but more of a reference guide for locals, and visitors. The current guide to birding Utah by McIvor is now over ten years old, and although it contains some good information, things have changed since 1998. Last year one of my goals was to start ground work on at least a digital guide to the birds of Utah and where to find them. I didn't get a whole lot done, but did some base work, and a few layout designs. Tonight I put that up on my website, as I plan on having an initial digital version of the guide as early as next spring. Take a look:

I guess we'll see what happens. And of course, feel free to leave some feedback on these VERY initial designs, and the information in them.

It is perfect the way it is, what the bird is and where to see it. Simple and ideal for birding Utah. It would sell, residents and people coming to visit Utah would buy it. A great idea.

I'm ready, are you accepting pre-orders? The best spot to look feature will be invaluable.

Wow, I'm so excited for this book. I'll definitely be buying a copy for myself and my parents when it's out! (BTW, will it all be your photos, or would you be buying the rights to others' photos? My dad's a Utah stock photographer and may have some things you could use.)

@Stephanie I will definitely be looking for photos to use, as I don't have great shots of every species fond in Utah. That won't happen until late this year. I will make an announcement when I get there!

I like the design so far. Keep us posted as you get more of it together.

@Oliver - absolutely! It's coming along nicely. In the past 2 weeks I've gathered more than 38 pages of habitat information for 167 of the 450+ species that have been recorded/reported in Utah. I have rethought the actual species accounts and they will be simplified--this is after all a bird finding guide, so description information will be left with Sibley and Peterson.

I still use Behle's Utah Birds and it is a lot older than 1998~ and it doesn't even have photos.
I look forward to buying many copies of your new guide. It's the perfect gift to give as a "house-guest thank-you." It will sell, don't worry. Are you going to add some local anecdotes on some of them, like Brigham Young's gulls who ate the locusts? or the reported Gyrfalcon by Judge Ritter from his back porch one New Year's morning?

Is there a service/website where one could post a picture of a bird and have it identified?
I'm new to northern Utah and I'm seeing some birds on my property that I don't recognize
but would like to know what they are.
Thanks,
Dave

@Dave, the Flickr Bird Identification Group is very good at quickly identifying birds from anywhere in the world. See: http://www.flickr.com/groups/bird_id_group/ . You can also send links to photos to any of the state birding listservs for help. See the sidebar at right to sign up for UBird, and this link to sign up for Birdtalk: http://www.utahbirds.org/connections/E-hotlines.htm
If you send photos to these listservs, it is best to post them somewhere else (like Flickr) and then send the link to the group, rather than attaching the photo directly to the message. Many people read these lists online only, where the attachments would not be visible.

Is this a place where I can post a picture of a bird I saw in the Uintah Mountains to get some help with identification?
