Following in the wake of Mr. Ingwell's post on favorite birds, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of our favorite places to bird in the state of Utah. As with birds, it's tough to pick one favorite. So what defines a favorite place? Good birds? Good habitat? While I love looking at birds (and other wildlife), I actually loved hiking first. So for me, I love spots that are out of the way and up in the mountains. The Lamb's Canyon Trail off of I-80 is great for that. Also Willow Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Anywhere that has singing Hermit Thrushes is usually pretty solid for me. I really like the Conifer/Aspen mix. If I shift to thinking about just pure birding for the goal of seeing the most variety of species, I'd obviously say Lytle Ranch in Southern Utah and Deseret Ranch in Northern Utah. Picking Deseret is sort of cheating since it is so large and has such a variety of habitats. But there's no rules to favorites other than for this post I'm saying Utah only! We can do a follow up post of "My Favorite Places! (World)" next. So anyway, let's hear where others like to explore...

Being a new-to-Utah birder, I am excited to see what people post so I can go explore those locations. So far, I am excited about regularly birding Antelope Island and the causeway as well as Farmington Bay, but those seem to be well known already.
Spring- Yellow Fork Canyon, Lytle Ranch, Garr Ranch, AIC, Hawkwatching (I know it's not a specific location, but pick a spot).
Summer- Anywhere in Big/Little Cottonwood Canyon, Bryce Canyon NP, Kolob Terrace, Zion NP.
Fall- AIC, Hawkwatching on a peak, Yellow Fork, Lytle Ranch.
Winter- Fish Springs NWR, Lee Kay Ponds, Farmington Bay, AIC.
My favorite places in Cache County are the Logan Fish Hatchery in winter (mostly for gulls, but also for lost shorebirds and others), and Rendezvous Park in spring, summer, and fall (mostly for passerines). Rendezvous is the best place to find Northern Waterthrushes in the county, and has also had a Black-and-white Warbler and a Mississippi Kite (not accepted by the state committee) in recent years.
In the Bird of Utah book I am including "10 places you've never been birding". These are 10 of my favorite out of the way birding locations that receive very little coverage and are in genera--just cool places. Montezuma Creek Canyon in San Juan County, Paria River in the Grand Staircase, Indian Peak WMA, in the remote southwest desert, and Leidy Peak in the High Uintas Wilderness Area are just a few of my favorites. They are off the beaten path; they are remote; and I have seen some cool birds at all of them. I can't wait for summer to arrive so Ican get back to a few of them!
Living in the SW area of SL county, I'm partial to Yellow Fork and Butterfield Canyons in the Oquirrhs. Not much in the way of trails though in Butterfield (Kennecott owned), unless you drive to the top. (Jeff--great Conifer/Aspen mix up there).
Other favs in Utah: fields and marshes from Mendon to Logan (where I first watched birds as a teenager); South Willow Canyon, Stansburys; Silver Lake area, Big Cottonwood Canyon; Jordan River trail (our favorite place is the section south of 126th S.).
Yellowfork Canyon is such a great area and seemingly under-birded. I'll have to make a point to get up there more this year.
I lost a Love Bird Tuesday, June 21, 2011 he/she is beautiful green with yellow (pretty light colors) peach-faced. I have posted many many pictures of it on KSL.com if you find one and you can contact me there. We are heart sick without it. Here is the link with lots of pictures.
