Looks like a Female Kestrel...........with significant feather wear on the tail.

I'm going with female Kestrel as well. Looks like orangish red in the upper primaries & leading edge of the underwing. I agree that it looks like something weird is going on with the tail, but that could just be the angle of the photograph.

I'm guessing Jerry is going to school us here. Is this one of those quizzes where it looks like one species and is actually another?

2nd Guess.... Prairie Merlin, but that got overruled by Kestrel.

When I first looked at this last night I thought female kestrel, but I just looked at it closer and I'm seeing something on the topside view of the outer flight feathers/primaries of the right wing that look merlin to me. So, I'll say it is a female Prairie Merlin.

Not trying to trick anyone, just wanted more responses. The thing about quizzes, they are just photos usually in tough poses, weird plumages, etc. A great photo is usually easy.

Obviously as this bird flew by me, it was close and in good light, but I chose this photo to post because I'm a bastard. Wait a second, I could be wrong...maybe being tricky is what quiz photos are all about?

Uh oh . . . I sense a big shock is coming. So, I'll add to my guesses a sharp-shinned hawk, but the tail banding doesn't seem to fit, so how about a . . . . . . . . ????

You know, what is most noteworthy here is that most photographers stop clicking their camera once the bird goes past them. Jerry doesn't, and that is a good thing for all of us, photos like these force us to look at things from an unusual perspective that will eventually help us in the field.

. . . . anxiously awaiting the answer on this quiet Thanksgiving Day!

Prairie merlin...gotta go, but thanks for the responses. I like the way Vic broke it down.

Check out the blog entry a while back on female Kestrel vs. Prairie Merlin.
